League season 2008/9
League decider

A highly creditable runners-up finish at the Super 15's was then bettered when Paul Preston and his Motherwell "A" team returned from Craig Tara having won the Super 11's. With a healthy B team now a regular feature of these touraments, more and more players are getting the chance to sample and have success at a national level, so well done to all concerned.
At a local level there was a changing of the guard. After a fantastic run of 7 consecutive league championships, the Derby Inn were finally reduced to a 3rd place finish by the 2 Bar147 teams. These 2 teams showed excellent form all season and the quality of these 3 squads was among the best Motherwell League has ever seen. In an exciting a finish as you will get, Bar 147A pipped Bar 147B to the championship in a nail biting league decider.

The league was also pleased to welcome 2 new teams on board when the Eagle Inn and the Carousel B joined. The first year in a league is always the hardest, so well done to both in completing this season, achieving some good results on the way. Other teams who performed well included Jack Daniels who narrowly missed out on 4th spot despite struggling to field a team for the 1st half of the season and the 32 club, who proved (yet again) that going to Shotts was always going to be one of the hardest fixtures on the calendar.

Every team played their part this season and it is pleasing to see new players learning the game and improving the standard of the league as a result, so a genuine "thank you" to all the players who keep Motherwell & District Pool League flourishing.

Mid-season saw a change in committee. Whilst the first 6 months have been challenging, you can be assured that we will all put in the work and dedication for the coming and future seasons. Some of this work is already starting to bear fruit and we are looking forward to planning for the new season. Behind the scenes, the last few months have seen
The publication of a new constitution
The new website being launched
Sponsorship and advertising being secured for the coming season
Dozens of potential venues being visited to try to increase team numbers
New team information packs and posters have been compiled and passed to new venues
Local Press coverage has been resumed
Proper accounting and financial reports are now available
So, whatever happens, rest assured your committee is putting in the hours to slowly grow and improve the league each season

For season 2009/ 10, we are confident that we will be able to return to operating the league under 2 divisions. Relegation and promotion will guarantee "meaningless games" will be greatly reduced and the level of competition for players of all standards will improve. New features for the new season include plans for non-pool events, nights out etc. Added to this is the re-introduction of a proper presentation night, the likely formation of a social committee and hopefully a more enjoyable experience for all members.

So all in all, these are exciting times for MDPL, with the new teams coming in. I believe there is probably no other league in Scotland which has seen such improvement in the last couple of years. In an era where shrinking team and player numbers are the norm, we are bucking the trend and this improvement will hopefully be sustained over coming seasons taking Motherwell back to the kind of level an area of our size and quality should be aiming for. All these plans sound great, but it comes down to one key issue. Every player counts. Whether you be Scotland's no.1 player, or someone who plays every other week for a team at the bottom of the table, we value your contribution. Without willing players of all abilities, our league will stagnate, so thank you to all our members for your continued support and I hope you enjoy everything your pool league will have to offer in season 2009/ 10.

Roll on September!
